Broncos' Matt Prater breaks NFL record for longest field goal with 64-yard kick

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Denver Broncos kicker Matt Prater kicked a 64-yard field goal to break the NFL record agains the Tennessee Titans.

As the first half expired in Denver Sunday, history was made. Denver Broncos kicker Matt Prater kicked a64-yard field goal through the uprights to break the NFL record for longest field goal.

The Broncos entered the half down only 20-21 to the Tennessee Titans thanks to Prater's record-setting kick.

Denver was 18 degrees at opening kickoff, making Prater's kick all the more impressive. It was basically a leathery icecube that Prater sailed through the uprights 64 yards away.

Four kicks had been made from 63 yards previous to Prater's record-breaking attempt, including one by longtime Broncos kicker Jason Elam, the franchises' all-time leader in points scored. Now, again, a Broncos kicker stands alone atop the record books.

Denver will receive the second half kickoff.
